We would love to meet you and to show you around our wonderful school. Please get in touch by calling Mrs Walsh, our school business manager, to arrange a visit.

Why do we teach Science?

At Great Corby School and Nursery, we believe that science enables children to Explore, Discover and Learn about the world around them. We want our children to be curious, ask questions and develop a sense of wonder about living things, materials, forces and the ever-changing world in which they live.

Through practical investigations, high-quality resources, first-hand experiences, visits, visitors and exploration of our local environment, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to think and work like scientists. We encourage children to question, investigate and make sense of the world around them whilst recognising the important role science plays in our daily lives and future discoveries.

Explore

Children explore the world through observation, investigation and first-hand experiences. Whether studying plants and animals in our local environment, investigating materials or exploring forces, children are encouraged to ask questions, notice patterns and develop their natural curiosity.

Discover

Children discover how scientific ideas help us understand the world around us. Through enquiry and investigation, they learn to make predictions, gather evidence, identify patterns and explain their findings using scientific knowledge and vocabulary.

Learn

Children learn key scientific knowledge and skills across biology, chemistry and physics. They develop the ability to think critically, work scientifically and apply their understanding to new situations, helping them make sense of the world both now and in the future.

What Do Children Gain From Science?

By the time they leave Great Corby School and Nursery, children will:

  • Develop curiosity and a lifelong interest in the world around them
  • Ask thoughtful questions and investigate with confidence
  • Understand key scientific concepts and vocabulary
  • Use evidence to support their ideas and conclusions
  • Develop resilience, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • Appreciate the role science plays in everyday life
  • Understand and care for the natural world around them
  • Be equipped with the knowledge and enquiry skills needed for future learning

Most importantly, children will leave Great Corby as confident young scientists who are eager to continue exploring, discovering and learning about the world around them.
