Why do we teach History?
At Great Corby School and Nursery, we believe that history enables children to Explore, Discover and Learn about the people, events and societies that have shaped our world. Through studying the past, children develop curiosity, ask questions and gain an understanding of how people lived, worked and experienced life in different times and places.
We believe that local history plays an important role in helping children understand the community in which they live. By exploring both local and wider historical events, children develop an appreciation of how the past has influenced the present and how they can play a part in shaping the future.
Through the study of history, we encourage children to think critically, consider different perspectives and develop a lifelong interest in the stories of the past.

Explore
Children explore the past through stories, artefacts, photographs, documents, visits and first-hand experiences. They are encouraged to ask questions, investigate evidence and develop their curiosity about how people lived in different periods of history.
Discover
Children discover how historical events, people and societies have shaped the world around us. They learn about local, British and world history, making connections between different periods and developing an understanding of chronology, change and continuity.
Learn
Children learn historical knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills that help them think like historians. They learn to use evidence, consider different interpretations and communicate their understanding of the past with increasing confidence.
